Strengthening of existing steel roof, Zdar nad Sazavou
Client: Manhattan Real Estate Management
Stage: Detailed design
Design: 01/2012 - 05/2012
Original superstructure is a single-storey single-aisled hall building with a ground plan dimensions of 30 x 48 m. The roof shape is saddle, the height of the ridge is 6 m. The main superstructure is formed by transverse frames made of welded I-shape sections, at a span of 30 m. Frames are divided by bolted joints in the frame corner, in 1/4 of the span and in the middle. Continuous purlins of thin-walled Z-sections are bolted to the upper flange of the transverse frames via welded kickers.
At the request of the owner of the building, a complete survey of the structure was carried out. Specimens of the steel structure were taken in order to determine the strength class of the steel. Subsequently, the load-bearing capacity of the existing steel structure for the effects
of the load according to the currently valid standards (EC3) was checked. The result was unsatisfactory.
Based on these facts, the owner of the building decided to reinforce the structure. The ledges of the main frames were supplemented with a lower truss made of tube elements. The static height of the truss in the middle of the span is now 1.5 m. The columns of the frames were reinforced by welded L-sections to the inner flanges. Some purlins were reinforced with L sections.
